HSU's Statement in Response to New York City's Release of the Shelter Repair Scorecard

“Homeless Services United and our members are grateful for the City’s financial commitment announced today to address the decades-old disinvestment in homeless shelters.  We have made no secret of the immediate need for an infusion of capital and maintenance funding to address current shelter facility conditions and moving forward, the need for adequate budgets to ensure that our buildings continue to meet the highest standards for our homeless clients.
We have made a number of recommendations to the City in regards to the Scorecard and inspection process, and I am heartened to see some of them reflected in today’s announcement. It is crucial to the success of any new homeless policy that those tasked with carrying out the policies be at the table when they are developed in order to provide critical expertise and feedback.
The homeless services sector stands ready to work with City and State government oversight agencies to create transparent and accurate evaluation standards and procedure for ensuring high quality shelter facilities.”
