Kristin Miller in City Limits: Leading on Homelessness with Compassion, Not “Tough Love”

New York City is at a turning point on homelessness.

In a new op-ed in City Limits, Homeless Services United Executive Director Kristin Miller writes about what the incoming Mamdani administration will inherit: a shelter system serving roughly 125,000 people each night, a tight housing market, and a public narrative that too often misrepresents who is experiencing homelessness and why.

Kristin argues that “homelessness in New York won’t be solved by denial or tough love” and lays out a path that centers compassion, collaboration, and evidence. Drawing on the experience of HSU’s 55+ member organizations, she highlights what families, students, and working New Yorkers are facing, and offers clear areas where the new administration can act, from improving shelter conditions and outreach to speeding permanent housing placements and investing in workforce development.
